SIEC Highlights from Michelle

June 23, 2021

As the 2020-2021 school year wraps up for the SIEC team, our team would like to share some of our standout moments from this year’s career discovery events.

Today, Michelle shares her highlight…

When asked to think about a highlight of my year, it was hard to choose just one. This year was indeed a challenge, but it made the successes that much sweeter.

When we transitioned all our programming to virtual formats, one of the events I was disappointed to see the “in-person” aspect go was Connected. First off, we were sad there would not be cheesecake. But most importantly, we knew we would miss the opportunity for students to engage in meaningful conversation with the amazing women in our community. However, the show went on, and I cannot believe the excitement we generated with both the students and mentors. Once again, there are so many positives that have come into our lives over the past year. Since our event was virtual, we were able to host students, mentors, and speakers from across our province. This event, which I could not imagine as a virtual event, was fantastic. So fantastic that we decided to offer it a second time! Our Spotlight Speakers shared their stories, words of wisdom and had us laughing until we cried. Our mentors shared insights into their careers and answered the students’ questions. And most importantly, the students demonstrated such maturity in their commitment to exploring their future career paths. We never thought that sitting behind our computer screens attending a virtual event could leave us feeling so empowered and create such meaningful connections between the young women and mentors.

Hosting our events virtually also allowed us to record our Spotlight Speakers so anyone who missed it could still learn from these amazing women. To hear the stories and life lessons these women shared, check out our Fall Connected event and Spring Connected event on YouTube. And be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel see all of our virtual events from the past year!

We look forward to the opportunity to gather in person once again to network, develop career connections, and explore career options. And we can guarantee there will be cheesecake!
